GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what is the difference?
SEO gets a page found and ranked by search engines, AEO gets it chosen as the direct answer to a question, and GEO gets it read and quoted by AI assistants. They are one body of work under three names: a page crawlers can reach, that answers clearly, that can be trusted, and that lets the reader act.

What do SEO, AEO and GEO each mean?
SEO, search engine optimization, is making pages that search engines can crawl, index and rank. AEO, answer engine optimization, is making a page the one quoted as the answer, first in featured snippets and voice assistants and now in AI answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, is making pages that assistants such as ChatGPT can fetch, understand and cite.
| Compared | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| What wins | A page, ranked in a list | The one answer shown | A passage, quoted in a written answer |
| Where it shows | Search results | Featured snippets, voice answers, AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| What you measure | Rank, impressions, clicks | Questions where you are the answer | Mentions and citations, often with no click |
| Where the term comes from | The oldest of the three | An industry term with no single source | A 2023 paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization |
The terms overlap more than the people selling each one suggest. AEO and GEO both ask for a passage that answers one question on its own. GEO adds one demand of its own: most AI crawlers run no script, so the words have to arrive in the HTML the server sends.
Where do SEO, AEO and GEO overlap?
clickd grades every page in four stages, and each term asks for some of them. In our reading, access belongs to all three, since a page no crawler can reach is never ranked, chosen or quoted. Understand is most of AEO and GEO. Trust and act matter to all three, and more when an assistant has to decide which source to name.
Pages that pass, stage by stage
| What the stage needs | Pages that pass, higher is better |
|---|---|
| The words in the HTMLAccess | 89% |
| Pages allowed in the indexAccess | 98% |
| A heading phrased as a questionUnderstand | 31% |
| The answer right under itUnderstand | 9.9% |
| Structured data that parsesUnderstand | 63% |
| Sources a reader can followTrust | 73% |
| A date a reader can seeTrust | 81% |
| A way to get in touchAct | 83% |
Access mostly holds and the answer shapes mostly do not. 89% of key pages carry their words in the HTML, but only 9.9% of article pages put a short answer right under a question heading. A score or a rule passed says pages are well formed. It does not say an assistant cites the site.
Which should you do first?
Access, then understand, then trust and act. In that order each fix makes the next one count: a clear answer on a page crawlers cannot read helps no one. It is also the order of what each stage is worth in clickd's score: access 35 points of 100, understand 30, trust 20 and act 15.
- Access: let search and AI crawlers in, put the words in the HTML, and keep every page you want found indexable.
- Understand: one main heading, headings phrased as the questions people ask, and a short answer right under each.
- Trust: a visible date, a named publisher, and sources a reader can follow where the facts are.
- Act: a clear way to get in touch, and for a business that serves a place, a phone number that can be tapped.

How do you measure SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO is measured in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools: rank, impressions and clicks. AEO and GEO are harder, because an answer can name a site without sending anyone to it. The honest measure is to ask assistants the questions your buyers ask, the same ones every week, and count when your site is named. clickd's score checks that pages are well formed; it is not a count of citations.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. An assistant still has to fetch and index a page before it can quote it, so everything SEO asks for still holds. GEO adds writing so one passage can stand on its own as an answer.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly. Both want a page chosen as the answer to a question. AEO grew up around featured snippets and voice answers; GEO is about assistants that write an answer and name a few sources under it.
Do I need different pages for each?
No. One page that crawlers can reach, that answers its question right under a heading that asks it, and that shows its date and sources serves all three.
Does an llms.txt file help GEO?
It is cheap and harmless, and no major assistant has said it reads one. The words in your pages matter far more. See the llms.txt guide.
A score or a rule passed says pages are well formed. It does not say an assistant cites the site. For where the GEO term came from and what the paper behind it measured, see what GEO is.

How the figures were counted. Every figure on this page is counted from the 316,711 sites clickd has read, each at its latest read, with drafts left out, as of November 1, 2026, and worked out again as sites are read. A share of pages counts only pages that were read: a site read only in part speaks for the pages read and no others. Each rule is the one in clickd's rulebook, decided by code. A score or a rule passed says pages are well formed. It does not say an assistant cites the site. The methodology explains each count.
